Toward the very end of my seven hour visit to the ruins of Pompeii I arrived at the famed Villa of Mysteries. And as luck would have it, the room that houses the Dionysian Mystery fresco was the very last room I entered as I wound my way through the villa. As a painter myself, I have long been inspired by the clarity of the figures, the variety of their gestures, the intriguing mystery narrative, and the bold red background. It was a spectacular end to a most remarkable day.
