While the Miami area has long been known for its appealing physical environment of brilliant light, magnificient weather, lush tropical vegitation, beautiful beaches, dramatic sunrises and sunsets, and dependable sunshine its more recent reputation is that of 'the City of the 21st century'.
Miami-Dade county has a population of over two-and-a-half million residents. It is home to ten major art museums, two major universities, three smaller non-profit universities, the nation's largest community college system, the Adrienne Arsht Center for Performing Arts, The Miami Grand Opera Company, Miami City Ballet, the internationally renowned Miami Film Festival, the Miami Bookfair, one of the largest book fairs in the country, two large community based artist groups (South Florida Art Center, The Bakehouse Complex) that provide studio space and support services to artists, eight non-commercial alternative exhibition spaces, scores of first-class commercial art galleries that represent national, international and local artists, multiple venues offering professional theater, a full schedule of major musical concerts, The Ultra Music Festival, ARTbasel: Miami Beach each December, The Frost Museum of Science, the Miami Seaquarium, Jungle Island, Fairchild Tropical Garden, and a world class zoo. And this list only begins to scratch the surface.
